Mateoisms

That little face!!! My Mati after being stitched up at the hospital.

This Mateoism entry isn't about something funny Mati said or did. It was about, rather, something which I need to prepare myself for more of ... blood, ERs and stitches. Yes ... that time has come!! I'm super happy with my boys and their never ending energy, but it's tough on the gut when that energy turns into a bloody eyebrow. It was a stupid accident - nothing cool to brag about, like Mateo falling from his surfboard to fight a tiger shark - he ran into some plates Nico was holding. That's it. Voila. Next thing you know, he's on the floor, hands to his eye. I carry him to a chair and see that he's bleeding. As soon as he lets me see his eye, I know we'll need to go to the ER. It was a deep wound, thank God it was in the eyebrow and not 8 cms further down!!!

I took him to the ER while Nico stayed with Santi (who also had issues of his own: a full blown allergic reaction that looked like hives due to some bug bite) and got him dressed. With Mateo's experience with needles, I knew he wouldn't have anything to do with the doctor putting local anesthesia and much less sewing him, so the nurses wrapped him in a sheet, taco style, and held him tight. I held his face while the doctor applied the anesthesia: do you know what it is to see a needle in my son's eyebrow????????????? Meanwhile Mateo was yelling, "Please mommy, help me! I can't move my arms! Aghhh, mommy, the doctor is hurting me!" Hearing his plea made me feel like crap. When she had finished and they uncurled him, I felt all my blood rush down to my feet.

But he's a trooper. He's doing a round of antibiotics to prevent any infection and this evening I changed his wound and it's looking good. He's been sleeping and playing well and behaving just as badly as before his accident. Clearly, boys don't learn ....
